Digital & Traditional Artist
Tadeusz Chmiel
I'm a digital artist and an oil painter living in Vancouver BC and working for ILM(Disney).
I’ve been working as a digital artist for the past 15 years. During this time I’ve been working on Star Wars, Marvel and Disney movies.
15 years ago I quit university and went all-in into digital art. I was learning everything I could learn. Reading every book, article, tutorial. Since then I have worked on many awesome projects and movies ( Halo, Marvel, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Disney movies, and more. Working on big blockbusters helped me with craft and is an amazing collaborative experience. It helped me meet awesome people and travel the world.
But my true love has always been producing my art. I don’t think a lot while producing my pictures. For most of the time, it’s my subconscious and muscle memory that I learned while working in VFX.
I’m interested in exploring new ways digital art could be used as a new art form. Creating pictures that have life on their own. I like the high contrast feel of analog photographs and theatrical lighting. It helps me create pictures that describe and interpret a slice of reality. I’m trying to capture one particular feeling about the subject. Almost like photographing an actor in a theatrical play, but with all the benefits digital art is giving us.
My style I would define as a combination of the oil painting process with brushstrokes and painting with light and technical knowledge of big blockbuster VFX heavy movies; While working on movies allows me to practice my digital craft, oil painting helps me understand more deeply how to depict emotions and teaches me how to be honest in my art. In my artwork, I try to combine these two mediums by translating traditional art sensitivity into the digital world.
